These are the most frequently penalized mistakes on AP exam FRQs and MCQs. Review each before your next practice session.

Common error

Buoyancy misconception: believing the buoyant force depends on the weight or density of the submerged object rather than on the weight of fluid displaced — a 10 kg steel block and a 10 kg foam block submerged to the same depth displace the same volume of fluid and experience identical buoyant forces if they have the same geometry

Common error

Applying Bernoulli's equation outside its valid conditions — Bernoulli holds only along a single streamline in steady, incompressible, non-viscous flow; students incorrectly apply it across streamlines or to turbulent flow situations

Common error

Confusing the continuity equation (A₁v₁ = A₂v₂) with conservation of momentum — continuity is a statement of conservation of mass for incompressible flow and has no direct momentum component; the two equations answer different questions

Common error

Sign and direction errors with hydrostatic pressure: forgetting that gauge pressure increases with depth (P = P₀ + ρgh), so a deeper object experiences greater pressure from the fluid above — students sometimes subtract rather than add ρgh
