Misidentifying Newton's Third Law pairs — students often pair forces acting on the same object (e.g., gravity down and normal force up on a book) rather than the correct mutual forces between two distinct objects

Free-body diagram errors: omitting forces (especially normal force on inclined planes, tension in multi-body systems), drawing force vectors originating from incorrect locations, or adding a fictitious 'centrifugal force' outward in circular motion problems

Common error

Applying Newton's Second Law to the wrong system boundary — failing to identify whether a problem calls for treating objects as a combined system or analyzing them separately with internal forces

Common error

Confusing the direction of friction: on inclined planes students frequently draw static friction pointing down the slope rather than opposing the tendency of motion (up the slope when the object would otherwise slide down)
