About the exam

AP Physics C: Mechanics is a 1.5-hour exam. Section I has 40 multiple-choice in 45 minutes. Section II has 4 free-response questions in 45 minutes (15 pts each, 60 pts total). Calculus is required. A formula sheet is provided. Of all AP Physics exams, Mechanics has the highest 5-rate.

Exam strategy notes

  • Variable-force problems require integration: $W = \int F(x)\,dx$, $x(t) = \int v(t)\,dt$. Set up the integral correctly and do not forget the constant of integration (initial condition).
  • Parallel-axis theorem: $I = I_{cm} + Md^2$. Always state which axis $I_{cm}$ is computed about before applying the shift.
  • Rolling without slipping constraint: $v_{cm} = r\omega$ and $a_{cm} = r\alpha$. Apply this to link the translational and rotational Newton's Second Law equations.
  • Gravitational potential energy in orbital mechanics is $U = -GMm/r$ (negative, becomes less negative farther from center). Don't use $mgh$ for orbital problems.
