Two subscores — understand both.

AP Music Theory is the only AP exam that reports two subscores in addition to the 1–5 composite. Many music programs use these subscores to award credit separately for written theory and aural skills courses. The 2025 national means were Aural: 3.02 and Nonaural: 3.00.

Aural Skills

Covers: aural-stimulus MCQ (41–43 of the 75 questions, heard via recording) + Q1–Q2 melodic dictation + Q3–Q4 harmonic dictation + Q8–Q9 sight-singing. This subscore reflects real-time listening ability: hearing pitches, rhythms, intervals, chords, and phrase structures.

Nonaural (Written) Skills

Covers: score-analysis MCQ (32–34 questions from printed notation) + Q5 part writing from figured bass + Q6 part writing from Roman numerals + Q7 melody harmonization. This subscore reflects reading, writing, and analytical skills applied to printed notation without audio.

Strategy note: If you are applying to a music program, check the college's AP credit policy. Some programs award separate credits for written theory and aural skills based on the subscore, not just the composite. A composite 4 with an Aural subscore of 3 may not earn aural skills credit at a school that requires a higher subscore threshold.

Nine FRQ tasks — what each one tests.

The written FRQ section (Section IIA, 70 min) contains 7 tasks totaling 118 raw points. The sight-singing section (Section IIB, 10 min) adds 2 melodies totaling 18 raw points. Together they account for 55% of your composite score.

Melodic Dictation

A short melody (4–8 bars) is played three times. You notate pitches and rhythms on a given staff with the first note provided. Both pitch accuracy and rhythmic accuracy earn separate points. Errors propagate — a wrong pitch that shifts all subsequent notes loses multiple points.

A 4-voice (SATB) passage is played three times. You notate the soprano and bass pitches and supply Roman numeral analysis with inversion figures. Q3 is typically in major; Q4 may include secondary dominants or minor keys. Hearing the bass motion is the most reliable anchor.

Part Writing from Figured Bass

A soprano and bass are given with figured bass symbols. You complete the alto and tenor voices following SATB voice-leading rules. Parallel fifths/octaves, voice crossing, and unresolved leading tones are each penalized. Work from cadence points backward to avoid errors that cascade forward.

Part Writing from Roman Numerals

A soprano line is given with Roman numeral analysis (which may include secondary dominants). You supply bass, alto, and tenor. This question specifically tests secondary function from Unit 7 — secondary leading tones require careful accidental placement and seventh-chord resolution.

Melody Harmonization

A melody is given; you choose chords that harmonize it and supply bass, alto, and tenor. No Roman numerals are provided — you must construct a functional T–PD–D–T progression and end with an authentic cadence. Your chord choices are graded for both syntax and voice-leading execution.

Two diatonic melodies (4–8 bars each), performed a cappella into a recording device with 75 seconds of silent preparation per melody. Scored on pitch accuracy, rhythmic accuracy, and musical performance. Stepwise melodies with clear tonal centers are significantly easier than disjunct or chromatic ones.

College Board does not publish per-unit exam weight percentages for AP Music Theory. Units 1–3 (fundamentals) are estimated to account for 21–31% of exam content; Units 4–7 (harmony) for 24–30%. All four harmony units directly test on the written FRQs (Q5–Q7) and dictation (Q3–Q4) — these are the highest-ROI units to master.

Master Part Writing Before the Exam

Q5, Q6, and Q7 (part writing and harmonization) together total roughly 50–60 raw points out of 118 in Section IIA — nearly half the written FRQ section. These questions are fully teachable and fully learnable with deliberate practice. Students who can write error-free SATB four-part harmony consistently earn among the highest written scores.

Develop Aural Skills Daily

The aural MCQ (41–43 questions) plus Q1–Q4 dictation plus Q8–Q9 sight-singing together account for more than half the exam's composite score. These skills cannot be crammed — they develop through regular ear-training practice over weeks. Sing interval drills, transcribe short melodies, and practice identifying chord qualities by ear every week.

Write Accidentals Explicitly

The most common error across the written FRQ section, per the 2025 AP Chief Reader Report, is omitting accidentals — particularly the raised leading tone in minor keys (V–i) and the temporary leading tone in secondary dominants. Write every accidental explicitly in your FRQ responses, even when you believe it is implied by the key signature.

Anchor Dictation on Bass Motion

On harmonic dictation (Q3–Q4), notate the bass voice first: root-position chords place the root in the bass; first-inversion chords place the third; second-inversion places the fifth. Hearing the bass interval motion (fifth down for V–I, step down for IV–V, etc.) is the fastest path to reliable harmonic dictation. Then confirm soprano and supply Roman numerals.
