FRQ Skill Units

Master each task type.

Exam Intelligence

Key challenges for standard-group students.

01.

Character Input Speed

Typing Chinese via Pinyin IME is slower than handwriting. Students must practice timed typing to produce adequate length in the 15-minute story narration and email windows.

02.

Formal Email Conventions

Chinese formal email conventions differ sharply from English. Formal openers (您好, 投函人), polite closings (此致, 敬礼;, 请回复), and honorific forms must be internalized.

03.

Heritage Speaker Score Gap

Total-group 5-rate exceeds 40% — but reflects near-native speakers. Standard-group pass rate is significantly lower (~54%). Standard students should target score 3 strategy before reaching for 4–5.

04.

Rejoinder Speed

Rejoinder clips are 2–3 sentences; no re-play. Students must process and select at native conversational speed. Practice with authentic short-exchange audio is essential before exam day.

05.

Story Narration Coherence

Merely describing each image independently scores 2–3. Students must build a coherent narrative with clear characters, causal logic, and resolution. Use time connectors and develop dialogue or inner monologue.

06.

Cultural Specificity

Cultural presentation must name a specific Chinese-speaking community. Examples: Beijing hutong culture, Taiwanese tea ceremony, Hong Kong Cantonese dim sum traditions, overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia.
